Description

Good morning everyone! In light of Valentine's day, today's image is The Heart Nebula, catalogued as IC 1805. This HII nebula is about 7500 light years away from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia. The beautiful red color of this nebula is due to the excitation of hydrogen coming from the energy of the stars in the center of the nebula. The open cluster of stars at the center of the nebula is known as Mellote 15, and contains stars more than 50 times as massive as the Earth's Sun. Happy Valentine's day, I hope you like today's image. Be sure to check back tomorrow for a new image, Clear Skies!
